Summary: Sports, gadgets, graphic design, and all things Boston are just a few of the topics you can read about here. Suffice it to say, if it catches my interest I'll write about it.

Did you ever get a little antsy trying to say something but not being able to find the right words for it? Or maybe too many words? It's like there's so much going on between your ears that you could never funnel it out your pie hole. That's not exactly the most flattering intro, but that's how I came up with the idea for my Friday Five. And here they are:

  • Summer thunderstorms are quite possibly the coolest display of Nature's awesome power.
  • If people didn't spend so much time playing head games, would life be just a little more fun?
  • Sometimes it's worth staying up all night to watch the sun rise, even if you're absolutely useless the next day.
  • Isn't there a rule that friends should stick to the same rules they want others to play by?
  • When you're on the highway late at night, do you ever stop to wonder where the hell everyone else is going?

Blah, it's 88 degrees with 53% humidity in Boston today. Not quite as gross as yesterday, but I could still melt. We're supposed to get some thunderstorms (which I love) later, so hopefully that will cool things off a little ... as long as they don't ruin my night out in Back Bay! This weekend should be perfect, though, if the forecast is right.

Today is a gorgeous day! I'm almost glad I quit my job so I can enjoy the weather instead of sitting in a stuffy office somewhere. Here's the view from my apartment's balcony (I just took this shot a few minutes ago).

You know you love it.

Looks like I picked a pretty good time to move back to MA, being single and all. My sister pointed out that Forbes magazine named Boston the Best City for Singles2 recently. We'll see if that helps me out, though ...

So today ended up being a little more exciting than I expected. I had planned to borrow my parents' van to retrieve the last of my stuff from CT, but last night my dad mentioned that a few of the tires had slow leaks. Not a big deal, I just had to check the pressure before I left and make sure they were all right. I check my own car's tires regularly, so I didn't mind taking a few minutes to stop at the gas station before getting on the road. Most of the tires needed a little air, so I filled them up and had a pretty uneventful trip down to my old apartment. I packed the last few things up in about an hour and then checked the tires again before heading back to MA. They all looked to be doing ok, so I expected a boring return trip. However, I had made it back to MA and had traveled about 15 miles on the Mass Pike when the excitement began.

I was going about 65 or 70 mph in the left lane when the back of the van seemed to jump sideways all of a sudden. I instinctively grabbed the wheel with both hands, but I could tell that the car's handling was way off. There was no shoulder on the median, so I had to get across the whole highway to pull into the breakdown lane. Fortunately there wasn't much traffic, but as I looked in my sideview mirror before changing lanes I could see a huge plume of white smoke coming out of the right rear side of the car. I made it safely to the side of the road, though, and got out to see what had happened. As I walked around the rear of the vehicle, I was totally surprised to see that the entire right rear tire had shredded. There were just strips of rubber hanging off the hub ... it's too bad I didn't have my camera with me to take a photo.

I'm no slouch, so I figured that if I changed the tire I could be on my way quicker. Unfortunately, the spare was flat so I was going to need help. I had already called AAA, but the Mass Pike Authority only allows them to service certain areas of the Pike and I was just past the exit that marks the end of their jurisdiction. A helpful state trooper stopped to make sure things were ok, though, and got the Pike Authority to send a truck. It took over an hour for the guy to arrive, but he filled the spare and I went on my way. Of course, I was still 50 miles from home, driving on three bad tires and a spare, so I was trying to take it easy. I had one more scare when I hit a patch of rough pavement on 95 North, though. For a split second it felt like I had blown another tire, so my heart skipped a beat. It was even more unnerving because in the back of my mind I was thinking about how the trooper had told me he was surprised I'd been able to control the van without getting in an accident. Guess I was just lucky!

I think I just wrapped up one of the most exhausting days of my life. My college roommate's bachelor party was in Atlantic City last night, but I originally said I couldn't go since my brother's college graduation party was in Salem, MA this afternoon. When our other roommate announced that he was basically flying in from Seattle for the night, though, I decided that I couldn't let him show me up by traveling cross-country!

I flew into DC around dinnertime, met the bachelor and then joined the rest of the groomsmen for the three-hour plus drive to Atlantic City. We arrived just after 11.00p and had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe before gambling until the early morning hours. I grabbed an hour nap and then made the trek back to DC so I could catch a flight home to MA for my brother's party. That's just finishing up now, though, so I think I'm going to pass out. Before I go, here's a photo of this morning's 6.00a diner stop ... now my old roommates can't complain that they don't have any photos on my site! (The bachelor's on the far left.)

Just barely awake ...

Ever notice how you always seem to get screwed when you do what you're supposed to do? This seems especially true behind the wheel of a car. A couple of guys with some time on their hands decided to illustrate exactly what I mean3 ... it's a pretty amusing distraction.
