Just as most people were expecting, the Prep pulled out a 28-7 win2 over Xaverian yesterday after trailing 7-6 late in the second half. The win gave Prep alum Brian St. Pierre (Boston College's starting quarterback) a chance to make fun3 of his BC teammate Derrick Knight, a Xaverian alum.

Well, they were anticipating such a crowd for the Prep vs. Xaverian Thanksgiving Day football game that they postponed the matchup until tomorrow at 11.00a so that they could play at Boston College ... they wanted to be able to accomodate everyone. The Prep has a football stadium that could probably do it, but I doubt Xaverian wanted to give us the "home field" advantage. Unfortunately, I have to work tomorrow so I'm going to miss the game. I'm sure it will be a good one, though.

The Prep4 is gearing up for another big Thanksgiving Day game5 against our archrival Xaverian. Once again, the game will decide which team emerges as Catholic Conference champion and gains a postseason berth. Last year's game was the stuff of legend, with Terrence's cousin hauling in a Hail Mary pass as time expired to put the Prep ahead in what had been a tied game (tied up after the Prep overcame a Xaverian lead). On paper, this year's Prep team appears unstoppable. They've outscored their opponents 356-67 and boast a deep roster full of college-bound talent, with players already signed on to Notre Dame, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt, among others. Despite those odds, Xaverian isn't likely to just roll over ... they always play up for this game, a rivalry almost a century in the making.

We got our first real snowfall of the season this morning. The trees look gorgeous ... they all have a thick coat of fluffy white snow. They were anticipating this storm, though, so apparently it isn't having any real effect on Thanksgiving travel (except for a few morons that skidded themselves off the road). Now maybe I can go out and play with my new 4x4!

The Celebration of Life dinner hosted by the Boston Living Center6 last night went well. This free dinner for members of the HIV/AIDS community almost didn't happen due to a lack of funding, but then the Boston Red Sox7 stepped in to sponsor the event. The only problem was that left the Living Center with one week to recruit 450 volunteers for the event. Thanks to an e-mail from their volunteer coordinator that made the rounds in Boston, they were able to do it. I volunteered for the Children's Room and ran into Megan, Alison, and Abbi, who volunteered for other duties. I ended up being the only guy in the Children's Room, but it was a great time. They were definitely playing the best music, there was a magician and a limbo competition, plus plenty of toys for the kids. I found my role early, too, drawing one older boy into a conversation about the LA Lakers (he had been sitting in a corner, looking rather bored with all the younger kids). By the end of the night, I'd brought him into a card game with a few of the other volunteers and I think he was having a lot more fun. If you're looking for a way to get involved around the holidays, I recommend signing up for this dinner next year.

Since I'm still looking for a f/t job, the last thing I thought I'd be doing is buying a new car. However, that's exactly what happened earlier today. What can I say? I was in the right place at the right time (thanks to Shelley, who clued me in to the deal) and I picked up a Nissan Xterra. It costs about $30 more per month than my last car, but it's loaded (I paid $21k and it's got a $29k sticker). It's black with all available options except the supercharger. The funny thing is that Shelley bought an Xterra, too, and they're identical twins right down to the color and options ... the only difference is that she had a remote starter installed in hers. Maybe I'll paint a big purple stripe down the side to make mine a little different (that's an inside joke for a good friend who can't leave a perfectly good car alone!).

If the skies remain clear, we could get one of the best Leonid meteor showers8 of the century tonight. The earlier, and smaller, peak will be at 11.30p, while the larger peak will occur at about 5.30a (Tuesday morning). If you miss out, astronomers are predicting an equally impressive performance ... in 2099.

Emily came into town last night on business. She works for a marketing agency that sets up local promotions for liquor companies and she's been jetting all over the Northeast this week. She was in town for a Romana Sambuca promotion with WAAF 107.3 fm at the newly redesigned Backstage (now called Boston Rocks). Before meeting her, I went out to happy hour with some old coworkers and we skipped all over town, starting at The Place, then moving to Aqua, Wendy's (gotta eat) and Vox Populi. After Emily and I had done some damage to her corporate account at Boston Rocks, we moved on to the Beacon Hill Pub. As usual, I ran into a bunch of people that I knew and finished off the night with a couple of cheap beers. I can't wait for Emily to come and play again!

For my 25th birthday last December (hint hint, my 26th is coming up), my parents said one of my gifts would be a portrait. My mother has one hanging in our living room and my father has one in our ballroom. They were both done by a now famous Chinese artist who was living in Boston. He also did one of me, my brothers and sister that hangs over the fireplace in the master bedroom.
Anyway, another family friend will be doing mine, but it wasn't until I moved back to MA that I could make arrangements to push forward with the project. The artist stopped by this morning, though, to discuss the portrait and take a bunch of photos. I settled on a pretty traditional pose, with a few symbolic features worked in (e.g. my tie is my school colors and my hand is resting on an old globe, since I love to travel). I'll be standing in front of mahogany paneling that is based on the new mahogany over the fireplace in our library. No word yet on when it might be finished, but I'll definitely post a photo here.

Looks like this week's restaurant trend is going to continue. My sister treated me to dinner at Whiskey's last night after we went to happy hour at the Rattlesnake with friends from MetroLacrosse9. We had our usual 10-cent wings, so it only cost $1.50 (not counting the two beers I had), but I still really appreciate the gesture. Megan took me out to Silvertone today, too. She's been so busy (new job, getting engaged) that we hadn't hung out in a while, so it was good to catch up over a leisurely lunch. Silvertone's meals are all reasonably priced and more than enough to fill you up ... Terrence seems to like that place (and he has great taste).

I've been to quite a few restaurants this week. I went to Brown Sugar on Saturday (Thai, courtesy of Jun) and to PF Chang's today (Chinese, courtesy of Shelley). I'd never been to either before, but I'm sure I'll be back. We tried a little of everything at Brown Sugar, which is near the intersection of Comm Av and Babcock St, such as Lemon Chicken, Dancing Avocado and the Combo Platter. The service was amazing and the food was great. PF Chang's, which is between Boston Common and the Public Garden, was equally pleasant. We started off with the Lettuce Wraps, then split the Orange Peel Beef and Ginger Chicken. I couldn't have been more full after that lunch!
P.S.—My fortune cookie at PF Chang's claimed that "a friend has good news for you" ... ok, so who is it and what's the news?

I'm pretty happy ... the Pats finally pulled out a 38-7 win. That ends their four game losing streak at the expense of the Bills. Ha ha on you, Reitz!

This was a great weekend! Jun came up from CT because there was so much going on: there was a surprise birthday party for our friend Andrew on Friday night, a huge BBQ at my parents' place for the BC vs. Notre Dame game10 yesterday (we spent all day Friday getting ready), a party with Shelley and John last night, tackle football with the boys in Southie this morning and now the Brady vs. Bledsoe (Patriots vs. Bills) matchup this afternoon. I'm off to watch the game with friends at the White Horse Tavern, but the Pats have an early lead so hopefully they can pull out a win.

It's been almost ten years since I spent Halloween in Salem, so I'd forgotten how packed this little town gets! My brother and I joined some friends from around the corner and went down to the Rockmore at Pickering Wharf. It was good to see so many people getting into the holiday and wearing costumes; I've always thought it was pretty lame when people acted "too cool" to get dressed up. Steve and I went as the Lone Ranger and One-Eyed Willy (aka some pirate), respectively. I may even try to put up a photo soon.
