April Fools?
Is this some kind of joke? It was 71 degrees on Saturday and today it's snowing. April Fools Day isn't until tomorrow, but Mother Nature struck early.

New Toy
I just picked up a new toy Thursday night ... a laptop2. I've been doing more freelance graphic design work lately and had considered ditching my old desktop because it's a few years old. I was also eager to try out some of the new technologies that have come out. Yeah, I can be a geek.
Anyway, it's pretty cool. Setting up the wireless stuff was a piece of cake. I'm actually sitting in my living room, watching tv and sipping coffee while I type this! Now I can take this PC with me when I go to visit clients and actually show them what I'm working on, rather than jotting notes and e-mailing them images later. It's got a DVD player and lots of battery life, so I can watch my own movies when I'm traveling, too; I can even hook it up to the TV in hotel rooms. I'm also going to copy a couple hundred of my favorite MP3s onto it so that I'll have a "portable party" ... I can hook it up to someone's stereo and play hours of music without changing CDs. So far it seems like it was definitely a worthwhile investment.

Quote of the Day
My sister passed this along to me from her friend Brian:
You know the world's gone mad when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, France is accusing the USA of arrogance, and the Germans don't want to go to war!

Holy tickets!
I'm not sure what's going on, but it seems like everyone's calling me with spare tickets today. First my mom called to offer me a family friend's tickets to tonight's NIT tournament game between Georgetown and Providence College (and his seats are always like 10 rows off the court). I can't make that game since it's actually in Providence and I don't feel like driving down, but Marc called a little later with an extra ticket to tonight's Bruins game. I work right down the street from the FleetCenter and they're playing the Leafs, so I couldn't pass that up. It should be a good game ... I just hope the B's can win a game for a change.

Reuniting With Old Friends
Last week I was surprised to find out that my old friend Rachel was now living in MA. A classmate of mine from Georgetown introduced us while I was living in CT and she was in NYC. We lost touch back in 2001, but after moving to Boston a few weeks ago she tracked me down through Clint. We grabbed dinner at the Rock Bottom and then met up with friends at Clery's. On the way there, we bumped into a girl we both knew from Georgetown (I hadn't seen her since 1997!). Later on, at the bar, I saw two Hoyas who had lived on my floor freshman year, but they left before I could say hi. I missed them because I was talking to another Hoya who lived across the street from me my senior year. She was in town for business and I hadn't seen her since graduation. It was fun to run into so many old acquaintances!
Now that Chris, Rachel and I are all living in Boston, we'll have to convince Clint to come visit from Chicago ... we'll start by promising plenty of his favorite shot, SoCo and lime.

More sightings ...
Guess what? I saw that birthday blonde at the parade yesterday. Marc even turned to me a moment later and was like, "isn't that the girl?" I think she's following me!
I also think I saw an old friend, but it's been almost six years since the last time we hung out (when she moved to DC in 1997), so I'm not sure. I'll have to get in touch with some of our mutual friends to see if she's in town again.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
The holiday has been pretty low-key this year. After work on Friday, I just went home and dyed my goatee. I had to work on Saturday, but I rebounded and joined a group of people, including some Tremblant friends, at Sissy K's in Faneuil Hall afterwards. It was only 7.00p, but there were already lines outside the more popular Irish pubs like the Black Rose. Casey and I grabbed dinner at Bertucci's (I know, not very Irish) and then went to Phil's apartment in Cambridge, since he had invited some people over for wine in celebration of his birthday. We stayed there for a few hours, then met my sister and her b/f in Back Bay around midnight.
Sunday was a much more traditional Saint Paddy's celebration: we joined Marc in Southie for the annual parade. We also met up with my brother and sister, a few friends and a few random people along the route. We even bumped into the group from the night before. The weather was really nice while we were watching the parade, but it cooled off quickly in the afternoon and I seem to have picked up some kind of 24-hour flu. I felt a little feverish after the parade last night, but I'm doing better now. That's a good thing, too, because I'd like to grab a Guinness tonight and would hate to miss out on account of a silly fever.

A new national holiday?
The 1759 Society4 is lobbying to make St. Patrick's Day a national holiday. If you think this is a good idea, why not print out their petition5 and fax it in? In fact, you should probably get all your friends, family, coworkers and neighbors to do the same.

Photo Fun
Is it me, or is this blonde not this same girl6? I'm sure it is, because the brunette in the first photo looks like the girl on the far right in the second. I found those while looking through Harpoon's photos from last weekend's Saint Patrick's Festival.

All Saints Day?
I'm not sure what to make of this, but I just stumbled on some information at IMDB7 that seems to indicate they're working on a sequel to one of my favorite movies: The Boondock Saints. The original is something of a cult favorite about two Irish brothers from South Boston who engage in their own brand of vigilante justice. I think the working title for the sequel, The Second Coming, was better than the one they're now using (All Saints Day8), but what do I know? It looks like the original actors will reprise their roles, so I can only hope that the second coming is as good as the first.

Harpoon Brewery does it again.
Yesterday's St. Patrick's Day Festival9, the first brewfest of the year, was a ton of fun! Stef and I went on our own, but met up with a bunch of friends, including the elusive Gunner. (He's made a promise to make it out with us more once his house hunt is over.) My usual brewfest companion, Marc, was out in Arizona for the week with his g/f, but he'd be proud of the way things turned out. His big fixation is on how many random people I'll bump into at this kind of event. Well, the magic number turned out to be ten yesterday, including old coworkers, high school and college classmates, friends of friends and even one guy I've only met once before (on a recent ski trip to Canada). Oh, and one of the day's highlights was seeing Colum Cille Pipes & Drums10 perform. Their award-winning drummers are as good as they say and I can't wait to see them again in next weekend's South Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade11!

What a difference a day makes.
Just yesterday, it was like armageddon on the roads with cars spinning out and accidents everywhere. Today, it's over 40 degrees and there isn't a cloud in the sky. It's got me looking forward to spring ... or at least tomorrow's Harpoon Brewery12 St. Patrick's Day Festival!

Talk about lucky 3s ...
A woman in Florida gave birth13 to her 3rd child on Monday, March 3rd (03/03/03) at 3.33p ... and without having the birth induced. I wonder what the odds of that are.

Boston drivers suck ... or maybe it's the weather.
Ok, we're getting even more snow today (I've heard between 4 and 8 inches worth) and I'm so glad that I commute by train. Boston.com14 is already reporting a series of major accidents in eastern Massachusetts. The more serious ones are ridiculous:
- 100 cars on 95 South in Attleboro;
- 20 cars on Route 24 in Raynham;
- 12 cars on Route 3 on the Kingston/Duxbury line.
And this storm's just getting started. I hope we don't see too many more accidents like these, though. Stay safe ...

Play with Planes
This is almost as much fun as a real paper airplane15 (if a little more technical). Play around with it a little ... you can go for distance, see how many loop-the-loops you can do, etc. It's a little too windy outside in Boston, nevermind cold, to throw these for real today.
