Is that real or is it iron on?
Back in 1996 when I was 19, I had a shamrock2 (I've got the luck of the Irish) inked at Jim's Tattoo3. While loading the car a few days later for a roadtrip to the Atlanta Olympics, my Dad spotted it and asked, "Is that real or is it iron on?"
I got on the road before I could show my Mom, so the first thing she said to me when I returned was, "Let me see! Let me see!"
Neither of them seemed upset at all.
Soon after, I designed another that I planned to get "someday." Well seven years later, that day was yesterday. The design is a combination of a Sagittarian arrow4 (I was born in December), a Celtic cross5 (I'm Scottish and Catholic), and the symbol for the Roman god Mars6 (which is the symbol for male). I also had it done in a deep blue, because blue has been a school color for every school I've attended since 2nd grade. Leigh came along with me and took the following photos.

One for the road ...
Liz just finished her internship at the Boston Globe7 and is getting ready to move back to MD, so Jeff came up to help her. They spent a few days vacationing on Cape Cod first and, since I was heading down there for a deep sea fishing trip, Kim and I were able to join them for a night out. After some Guinness and a round of SoCo, we grabbed a few doughnuts and called it a night, but not without taking our last photo together in MA.

Good friends, good times
Casey is quickly becoming my concert connection. She's introduced me to a bunch of great bands this summer, including Maroon58 (Erin also gave me their CD to check out), Howie Day9, and Franky Perez and the Highway Saints10. We caught FXP at the House of Blues11 last night for $10 and caught a great opening act, Mieka Pauley12. She's a local artist, too, so she should perform in Boston often. By the way, Franky Perez rocked! There was a middling crowd at the HoB, but the way the band performed you'd have thought they were at the FleetCenter. I picked up their CD after the show and would love to catch them next time they're in the Northeast. Check out their site, where you can hear a few clips of their music, and you'll see why.
Throw in artists like Mayve13, Chris O'Brien14, and the Average White Boys15 and this has got to be one of the most prolific summers for me and new music. The last time I discovered this many great bands was the fall of 1994, when I was introduced to The Dave Matthews Band16 (before Under the Table and Dreaming was released), Big Head Todd and the Monsters17, Vertical Horizon18, The Samples19, and Guster20 (who Casey used to tour with, incidentally). Two years later, I became the Concert Chair at Georgetown University21 and brought both Big Head Todd and Vertical Horizon to campus for performances. The two original members of VH had actually graduated from Georgetown in the early 90s and it was their first performance on the Hilltop since their undergrad years.

Goodbye's are never easy.
Yesterday, Alex took a turn for the worse. His breathing became labored and he became too weak to even lift his head when someone came into the living room. It was obvious that he was close to the end. He seemed comfortable, but we took turns keeping vigil over him all day.
As night fell, my mom stretched out on the couch so that she'd be there if he started to fidget. Every now and then he mustered up the energy to find a more accommodating position and she was concerned that he might fall off the chair in his weakened condition. I sat with him for an hour or so before heading off to sleep, but about 45 minutes later he passed away. Mom was with him and said that he went quietly.
Alex spent almost 20 years with us, so it will take some time to get used to this. I've already caught myself glancing towards his favorite chair as I pass by the living room a few times. I've always considered myself a dog person, but he definitely turned me into a cat person, too. We're all going to miss him.

Woof!
My cousin Dan23 seems to enjoy online quizzes at sites like eMode24. I just tried their What breed of dog are you?25 quiz ... I think the results are pretty flattering. But are they accurate?
No bones about it, you're a popular, fun-loving Golden Retriever. Adored by all and too cool for school, you're extroverted and enthusiastic. Your magnetic personality makes you the life of any bash. Since you're a true people-dog, you genuinely love all kinds of social gatherings. Going to parties, dinners, and other shindigs is the best way to add faces to your constantly growing circle of friends. But besides being on the social A-list, you're a confident, well-rounded pup who's definitely something to bark about. Pretty accomplished at anything you set your mind to, your sunny nature and winning ways make you one of everyone's favorite dogs. Woof!
