Summary: Sports, gadgets, graphic design, and all things Boston are just a few of the topics you can read about here. Suffice it to say, if it catches my interest I'll write about it.

Harpoon 5-Miler and Brewstock

Harpoon Brewery

In just a few weeks, the Harpoon Brewery2 will be kicking off summer with two big events on June 5th, the Harpoon 5-Miler3 and Harpoon Brewstock4. I'll be registering runners for the 5-Miler and attending both events. If you're interested in helping out, and don't mind an early morning, let me know and I'll add you to my volunteer team! (You get to attend the post-run party and get free admission to Brewstock.) If you'd rather sleep in, but don't want to miss Brewstock, come down to the brewery at 3.30p instead. These events are always fun, but this will be my brother's first (he just turned 21) and we'll be celebrating my sister's 26th birthday, which is June 4th.

How to Make Random Visitors Happy

Hundreds of people find this site with some very specific search terms. The numbers below, while high, account for searches since only 1-January-2004 ... and even then only for terms that appeared in each month's top 20. If I had access to the full records, I can only imagine what the real totals might be!

  • boston pub crawl (86)
  • pub crawl Boston (36)
  • boston pub crawls (27)
  • boston bar crawl (10)
  • bar crawl Boston (7)
  • pub crawl fundraiser (6)
  • bostonian pub crawl (4)
  • boylston pub crawl (4)
  • boylston street bars pub crawl (4)
  • irish pub crawl and boston (4)
  • pub crawl in Boston (3)

Anyway, if you're one of these visitors (or a friend who's "been there, done that"), I have some good news. The Drinkin'est Pub Crawl 2004 is happening in two weeks ... so mark your calendars, get to Boston, and join us for an afternoon in town. I personally guarantee good times, cheap drinks, and friendly crawlers.

The True Story of Troy

My brother has a part in a History Channel5 exclusive, The True Story of Troy6, that airs this Sunday, 16-May-2004, at 8.00p. Of course, you can always just buy the DVD7 and watch it at your leisure.

My First Crush

Wonder Woman (The Complete First Season)

Lynda Carter and, depending on who you talk to, the world's first or second (after Princess Leia's bikini) sexiest outfit are coming to DVD8 at the end of June. I remember watching the Wonder Woman series when I was a little kid and thinking that Carter was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. It didn't hurt that she could stop bullets and flew an invisible jet, of course.

Wonder Woman's creator, William Moulton Marston, was responsible for the systolic blood pressure test, which led to the polygraph (lie detector). Because of his tests, he was convinced that women were more honest and reliable than men and could work faster and more accurately. In a 1943 interview, he hinted at the impetus for creating Wonder Woman in 1941:

Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetype lacks force, strength, and power. Not wanting to be girls, they don't want to be tender, submissive, peace-loving as good women are. Women's strong qualities have become despised because of their weakness. The obvious remedy is to create a feminine character with all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a good and beautiful woman.

Enough about the Red Sox ...

Still, We Believe

It's that time of year, so I've been writing about the Red Sox a lot. This time around, however, I want to write about a new movie called Still, We Believe: The Red Sox Movie9 that opened on Friday night. It follows the lives of several fans during the turbulent 2003 season and I would recommend it to anyone who believes in the Red Sox (despite heartbreak after heartbreak), who doesn't understand the die-hard passion of a Red Sox fan in their life, or who claims to love all things Boston, including the Red Sox Nation. I saw the movie on opening night and I'm still giddy. Still, We Believe features fans who triumph over adversity and hitch their well-being to the success of the Sox, fans who become physically ill when the team suffers a setback, and fans who have to shave their legs twice a day from excitement (you'll get this when you catch the related one-liner). Even though we all know how the season ended, I found myself getting wound up for big plays as if seeing them for the first time, edgy in anticipation for imminent tragedies (like Johnny's collision in Oakland), and excited for what the 2004 season holds in store. This movie is to Sox fans what Top Gun was to pilots and I'll be first in line to purchase the DVD.

If Pedro Were a Patriot ...

As happy as I was for his outing in the Bronx last week, I should clarify my position on Pedro. Like many Sox fans10, I'm appalled at his recent behaviour. I find it unacceptable that he refuses to talk to the media except when it suits his purposes, such as making a public spectacle of management's attempts to resign him. As far as I'm concerned, his attitude is becoming a liability to the team, his skills (while undeniable) are hardly reliable, and his demands are unreasonable. Pedro claims he "just needs to make a living" ... well, I think $17.5 million is more than enough to guarantee that. And threatening to leave for the Yankees is just immature. He obviously has no respect for the fans and the support we've given him over the years. Even Andy Pettite, the former Yankees pitcher, knew better than to come to the Red Sox when he left the Bronx Bombers. He had too much respect for his former fans to do that to them. So as far as I'm concerned, Pedro can go. If he played for the Patriots, he would have been gone long ago. That organization has done just fine for the last few years without tolerating the antics of the players. Perhaps the Red Sox should take a look at their two Super Bowl victories and try to emulate that success.
