Mandy and Ben

Yep, another engagement2. Ben threw down the gauntlet a week ago and Mandy accepted. I believe the photo (which Ben sent) was taken shortly thereafter. Having left CT two years ago, I only met Mandy for the first time earlier this summer, but Ben had told me all about her and she was clearly "the one." Looks like now they've made it a formal arrangement! Congratulations, guys!

F'ing AOL
AOL, in its infinite wisdom (read: corporate stupidity), has denied me access to a screenname that I have used since 1995. I created it on a family account that was recently cancelled. When that account went away, so did the screenname. There was no way to transfer the screenname from a paid AOL account to a free AIM account, so my only options were to pay $2/month to maintain the name (and I hate recurring fees) or to wait six months and hope that someone else doesn't snatch my beloved name up before I do. Neither of those sound very appealing, huh? Guess it's time to go create a new screenname ...

No MPx100?

I'm disappointed to hear that Motorola has decided to kill3 their new MPx1004 smartphone before it even saw the light of day. They blamed its early demise on a lack of demand for candybar-style phones, but I can't imagine that's the case. There are plenty of people (myself included) waiting to upgrade their handsets that would have welcomed an entry-level (relatively speaking) smartphone with no moving parts. I'm hesitant to buy a flip-phone, slider, or swivel because the various hinges seem prone to breaking, especially since this would be my only phone. That being said, it's good to see some manufacturers playing around with new form factors5 that attempt to reconcile the myriad new functions that are being incorporated into new phones, such as MP3 players, digital cameras, and PDAs.

Sarah and Derry

Did I miss a memo somewhere? No sooner had I added Casey's announcement yesterday than Sarah and Derry sent out an e-mail informing everyone that they're the latest couple to join the ranks of the recently engaged. Maybe I should make this a daily feature! Or maybe the time spent on that endeavor would be put to better use, oh I don't know, dating? Once again I'm behind the curve, but congratulations to Sarah and Derry!

Casey and Jeremiah

For the second time in as many months, a friend of mine has gotten engaged. This time around it was Casey, with Jeremiah popping the question in the scenic splendor of New Hampshire's Mount Washington Valley. The only thing more beautiful than the summit views (and the couple) is the ring itself, but I wouldn't have expected anything less from Casey (a jeweler) and her eminently talented father, who brought her design to life. Congratulations to the Cape Cod couple!

End of an Era
Say what you will about the front office's reasons for trading the fan-appointed face of the Red Sox, but the lone point of certainty is that things will not be the same around Friendly Fenway. Nomar (Nomah!) may have irked fans and agitated teammates from time to time, but he always played hard. He was a perennial favorite and many are sad to see him go. Even Yankee fans6 are willing to admit that the rivalry has changed and the full ramifications of the trade will not be known for some time. I, for one, am sorry that his career with the Red Sox has come to an end, but I won't try to predict whether this is good or bad for the RSN7. All I know for now is that this is going to take some getting used to.
